Real-time elevations at Lowestoft

The UK national network of sea level gauges was established after violent storms in the North Sea in 1953 resulted in serious flooding. The network provides high quality sea level information to provide warning of possible flooding of coastal locations around the British Isles.

The UK National Tide Gauge Network, owned and operated by the Environment Agency, records tidal elevations at 42 locations around the UK coast. These data are also required for research into coastal processes, storm surge behaviour and sea level rise.

The UK National Tide Gauge Network and its data (displayed on this website) are the responsibility of the Environment Agency. As of April 2016, the network is maintained by the Environment Agency and its contractors. The National Oceanography Centre no longer maintain the network. Please direct all enquiries to the Environment Agency’s customer services department.
